Fun with Paper and Pencil
Scribbles
Even grown ups love this game and even the youngest child can join in by being the scribbler.
One person draws a scribble and the next person turns the scribble into a picture then draws a scribble for the next person to turn into a picture. “Right Brainers” – people with a well developed right side of the brain will easily see pictures in every scribble. They probably see shapes in the clouds and faces in the fire as well.
Car Bingo
Before the journey have fun with card, scissors and coloured pencils. Make squares of card and divide each card into six, eight or ten squares. In each square draw a picture of an object to look out for on the journey. One card could have road signs drawn on it – a great way of learning what they mean and why. Another card could have makes or colours of cars, or be a mixture of different objects and animals.
If you go for a day in the country, to the park, to a dog show, zoo, or country fair or museum you could make Bingo Cards for each of these occasions by drawing objects to look for.
Tick off the items as you spot them and the winner is the one who completes their card first.
Shopping Lists
Divide your shopping list and allow the children to help. Give them a list of things to shop for to help you. It is easier if the items are on shelves within their reach or easy to find in an area of say, Home Baking, Biscuits, Cheese.
Little ones who can’t read can have a picture of the item drawn next to the word.
Waiting Time Lists
Before the journey whether by car, train or aeroplane each person makes a list of things to look out for whilst you wait.
For a car journey think of things you may see along the way and add some you may not see but need to keep looking for. Then swap lists; this stops people making their list too easy so that they can win. A list could include road signs, types of houses, ie thatched cottages, types or colours of cars or vans and farm animals.
For an airport wait the list needs to be quite long and can include things like, a pink suitcase, a red label, a lady in a stripy top, untied shoe laces, a diamond ring, a hamburger, someone sleeping etc.
There are of course lots of paper and pencil games like Hangman, Battleships, Noughts and Crosses which can be found in books of games. There are also websites with free down loads of pictures to print and then colour if you search using the words Colouring Pages.
